Recommended Equipment |
Clothing
- Helmet – mandatory – please mark your name inside.
- Headband – recommended, to keep the sweat out of your eyes.
- Padded cycling shorts – recommended – they “mold” to the bike saddle, and act as shock absorbers.
- Cycling footwear – hard-soled shoes are recommended. The air-soles and cushioning on sneakers and gym shoes will detract from your pedaling power. Don’t leave loose laces to get caught up in the gears.
- Socks – short and thin socks are most comfortable.
- Cycling gloves – recommended – good-quality padded gloves absorb shock, reduce tension caused by gripping the handlebars, and protect against cuts and grazes if you fall.
- Toe clips – do increase performance, but only use if you have trained with them previously.
- Sunglasses – recommended – prevent glare, and shield against insects, wind, dust and stones from passing vehicles.
- Shirts – mandatory – you will be given special shirts with an ISCD "Good Wheel 2007" logo to wear during the ride. These will identify our participants for us, and make you “recognizable” to each other.
- Comfortable clothing for social events and leisure time (jeans + shirt)
Food & Beverages
- Water bottle – mandatory – You must have a water bottle on your bike, and you must refill it at each water stop. We will also provide you with water at regular intervals – and insist that you drink it. The extreme heat in Israel means that you should be drinking at least one liter (quart) of water every 30 minutes in order to prevent dehydration and energy loss.
- Isotonic drinks – will replace the salts lost through perspiration, and will help to reduce muscle fatigue. You shouldn’t wait until you are thirsty – if you are thirsty, you may already be dehydrated.
Energy Snacks.
Personal Hygiene & First Aid
- Toilet paper
- Tissues and wipes
- Sun block for face, body and lips
- Band-Aids, creams, talc and personal medications
- Laundry bags (or large nylon bags) for damp/wet clothing
- Laundry detergent
- Travel rope & pegs for hanging up wet clothing
Miscellaneous
- The ISCD cannot be responsible for any lost items, so please do not bring with you any valuables
- Pocket money (no more than $150 necessary)
- Credit card
- Your suitcases will not be accessible to you during the Ride, so you will require a small backpack for your personal items
- Camera (and film – if used)
- Alarm clock
- Bathing suit and goggles
- Puncture/flat tire kits. There will be mechanics available to you during the Ride. However, since they can’t be everywhere at the same time, it is advisable for you to have a spare inner tube and to know how to change a tire. This will also mean that you won’t have to wait for the mechanic in the event that you have a flat tire. A puncture is also possible during training, so please insure that you have a spare and a pump with you.
- Handlebar extensions – help prevent cramping in wrist and fingers, and are also useful for climbing up steep hills.
- Tires – If the tires are hard, they are less likely to puncture and the cycling is easier. When riding off-road, we recommend reducing the pressure a little. Always check your tire pressure.
